Benefits of Ginger and Ways to Use the Spice

Ginger is a commonly used spice that adds great flavor to any dish. It can be used in all forms; fresh, dried, powdered, even as a juice. But did you know the health benefits of ginger are extensive as well? Ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family like turmeric and cardamon and while the plant can grow several feet tall, the root is where all the good stuff is. In this article we will talk about several benefits of ginger and ways you can use the spice in everyday life.

Health Benefits of Ginger

Ginger has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries. Before we started taking a different medication for every symptom, people used the herbs and spices that God gave us to treat their ailments. Ginger can be used to combat nausea and vomiting, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation. Additionally, ginger is known to boost the immune system to fight off the cold and flu. It is also known to have anti-cancer properties.

Ginger contains compounds called gingerols and shogaols which increase the production of digestive enzymes. These compounds can help relieve bloating and indigestion. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce inflammation in the gut and improve overall health.

Many pregnant women find taking ginger relieves their morning sickness. Because of the above-mentioned properties, ginger helps the gut extract nutrients more quickly, which in turn reduces the nausea that happens often during early pregnancy.

Among the many benefits of ginger is its ability to strengthen the immune system. Ginger has been known to stimulate white blood cell production which is key in fighting off infections in the body. Ginger also has antimicrobial properties which helps the body rid itself of bacteria and viruses.

Ways to Use Ginger

Ginger can be used in many forms. You can buy ginger fresh, dried, powdered, or as a juice. While fresh is always my go to, the other forms can be more convenient at times. Like all natural remedies, consistency is key. So, if you are using ginger to gain from its health benefits, make sure you are consuming it frequently.

My favorite way to take ginger is in tea. Any time anyone in my family is feeling under the weather I make my “sick day tea” and we all sip on it all day long. This tea consists of ginger, garlic (see blog for all of the great benefits of garlic), honey and lemon. All of these ingredients are natural and are great for boosting your immune system and fighting off bacteria and viruses. To make sick day tea, chop 1 clove of garlic, chop 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, and place both in a tea infuser. Then add 1 tsp of lemon juice and 1 tsp of honey to a mug. Fill your mug with hot water, add the infuser, and steep for 5 minutes. I enjoy drinking a cup 3-4 times a day and find it to be a highly effective remedy.

If you are experiencing nausea from sickness or pregnancy, you can also use ginger tea for relief. Chop some ginger and steep it with lemon balm, mint, or cinnamon for 5-10 minutes. Enjoy 3-4 times a day.

Ginger is also used in many Asian inspired dishes. This is a great way to get some ginger in your kids without them having to drink a tea multiple times a day.

Conclusion

God created such a beautiful variety of herbs and spices that possess so many unique and wonderful properties. Whenever I can use these natural remedies instead of taking a pill, I count it as a win. Your body will receive it better, it is cheaper, cleaner, and has little to no side effects. There are many benefits of ginger and many great ways to enjoy this delicious spice if we just put in a little effort!
